so after over 20 Virgin Voyages, I know by now all of the shows,
0:04
all of the restaurants, every cocktail and every venue on each
0:08
of the four Virgin Voyages ships.
0:10
But I have to admit outside of Virgin Voyages, our experience with the other
0:14
Virgin Group brands is pretty limited.
0:16
We don't live next to an airport that's served by Virgin Atlantic,
0:20
and even the trains that we get in our part of the UK are
0:23
not served by Virgin Trains.
0:24
So actually it was a real delight to be asked along by Virgin Hotels to
0:28
come and see one of their properties.
0:30
And we were really interested to see how the Virgin experience
0:33
would translate from what we know at sea onto land and vice versa.
0:38
And what we found actually grounded our understanding of
0:40
the Virgin Group in general.
0:42
And I want to tell you about those little touches that we notice that carry across
0:46
from what we notice on Virgin Voyages
0:48
and how that plays out in the hotels so let me show you what we found in Virgin
0:52
Hotel Shoreditch and tell you whether we think a Virgin Hotel is a good place to
0:57
stay before your Virgin Voyages cruise and how that might change your vacation.
1:01
So let's take an inside look at Virgin Hotels London Shoreditch.

1:30
For those that don't know much about Virgin Hotels, and we certainly
1:33
didn't before we went along,
1:35
is that Richard Branson himself was actually planning this brand from 2010.
1:39
and it took five years from that point for them to open their first property.
1:43
So what led to that delay before they opened their first property in Chicago?
1:47
well, it's all down to Branson's refusal to launch the brand until
1:51
they'd completely rediscovered what hotels are all about.
1:55
and an area where this is really clear is the fact that they actually went to
1:58
the effort to patent a lot of the designs and processes that went into the hotel,
2:03
even down to their unique room design, something they call The Chamber.
2:07
So on Virgin Voyages you have your cabin, and in the Virgin
2:10
Hotels you have your Chamber.
2:11
So when Virgin Hotels launched in Chicago, The Chamber was the first hotel room
2:16
design that always included a privacy door between the dressing room and the bedroom.
2:21
they also went into every pain point that travelers generally have.
2:24
so things like slow wifi, hidden resort fees,
2:27
overpriced mini bars and long lines at the check-in queue.
2:31
So, although they took this painstaking amount of time to
2:34
get the Chicago hotel right,
2:36
it was obviously worth it
2:37
because βCondΓ© Nast actually named the Virgin Hotel in Chicago, the
2:42
best hotel for seven years in a row.
2:44
So right now there are eight Virgin Hotels.
2:47
The majority of them are in the USA,
2:49
so they have locations in Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas,
2:53
Nashville, new Orleans, and New York City,
2:55
with a Miami location due to launch in 2026, and there are also two Virgin
3:00
Hotels in the UK, one in Edinburgh, and of course the one that we visited,
3:05
which is in London in Shoreditch.
3:07
Now, the Shoreditch location itself has a bit of a fascinating past.
3:11
The building itself was actually the Mondrian Shoreditch,
3:14
which was a completely different hotel brand that couldn't quite find its
3:18
identity in the location that I was in.
3:20
that's when Virgin Hotels took it over and began transforming it,
3:23
leading to Virgin Hotels.
3:25
London opening its doors in August 2024.
3:29
Here's an interesting part.
3:30
The brand didn't actually consider it complete until April, 2025,
3:35
which is when Richard Branson visited the property himself
3:38
to open the on property bar called Hidden Grooves.
3:41
Hidden Grooves is actually touted as London's only Hi-Fi listening bar.
3:46
And so Richard Branson actually designed it himself.
3:49
It's a 38 seat vinyl listening lounge
3:52
that act as a love letter to Virgin Records 50 year history,
3:56
but we will get onto that in just a moment.
3:58
But why Shoreditch?
4:00
Well, this neighborhood was actually London's industrial
4:03
wasteland back in the eighties.
4:04
from warehouses to print works and abandoned factories.
4:08
It was a little bit down and out, and that's when artists
4:11
started moving into the area.
4:13
The artists moved in because rent was cheap and it was a place for
4:16
them to start practicing their craft.
4:18
And they started to open galleries and then the tech community
4:21
started moving in as well
4:23
until present day where it's East London's creative epicenter.
4:27
The likes of Banksy does street art here,
4:29
there are vintage markets every weekend,
4:32
and it even has more independent coffee shops per square mile
4:35
than anywhere else in London.
4:37
It also means that Virgin Hotels at London Shoreditch is only 10
4:41
minutes away from Liverpool Street.
4:43
so that's a really quick walk to the Elizabeth line.
4:46
So you can get to Heathrow Airport really, really quick,
4:48
which is actually a boon for cruise passengers like us who might
4:52
be flying down the day before.
4:54
It won't take you too long to get to the hotel, and then you can go down to
4:57
Portsmouth or Southampton the following day, which is exactly what we did.
5:01
All right, so after 20 plus Virgin Voyages, we know the
5:05
check-in experience off by heart.
5:07
You go to the port, you drop off your bags, you check in, you get your
5:10
Sailor band and you're ready to go.
5:12
It's a really frictionless experience
5:14
this is an ethos that Virgin Hotels have tried to keep as well.
5:18
So instead of waiting at the reception for a long time, they have an app
5:22
called the Lucy app, which is the name that's given to the in-room
5:25
entertainment experience as well.
5:27
And the idea here is that you download the Lucy app, but you can check in on there.
5:31
So all you need to do is pick up your room key, which is a very nicely designed,
5:35
and unfortunately I've lost mine, but it's a very nicely designed , red playing
5:39
card that you use as your room key.
5:42
Now, unfortunately, I could not get the Lucy app to work with our reservation.
5:46
It could have been something to do with the way it was booked,
5:48
but I'm not entirely sure.
5:49
But according to the Virgin Hotels website, the idea here is that you
5:53
can use the Lucy app to control the in-room entertainment and the
5:57
in-room lighting, for example.
5:59
And anyone who's been on Virgin Voyages will know that this is very similar to
6:04
the experience that you get inside of your cabin because you're also able to
6:07
change the lighting and the entertainment from the tablet inside your cabin.
6:12
So the only difference here is that it will be on your phone on an app
6:15
instead of the tablet in the cabin.
6:17
Now, again, we couldn't get this to work, but in theory it
6:20
sounds very similar to the Virgin Voyages experience if it worked.
6:23
But of course we're quite familiar with the Virgin Voyages Sailor app
6:27
and it appears that this is something that the Virgin Group and the Virgin
6:30
brand in general are trying to make sure that a lot of these experiences
6:34
and these interactions that you need to do are done digitally on the app.
6:38
And of course this is a push that we've heard a lot of feedback about from sailors
6:42
across the Virgin Voyages community.
6:44
So let me know your thoughts and the comments about what you
6:47
think about apps for hotels.
6:48
If you are asked to download it as part of your experience and you have no
6:51
choice, what do you think about that?
6:53
Let me know in the comments, 'cause I know Virgin Voyages
6:56
sailors have a big opinion on this.
6:58
So after we checked in, we were able to have a look around at the lobby
7:01
and the common areas in the hotel.
7:03
And one thing I will say about the London Shoreditch location is
7:07
the lobby was very, very small.
7:08
It was very nicely designed, very pretty, and it was very comfortable, but it
7:12
is very small, so it's not somewhere that you could just go and hang out in.
7:15
but in a true Virgin way, they have explained this experience in this way
7:20
where they call this a space that morphs throughout the day, and they tout this
7:24
as like a coffee lounge in the morning, somewhere, to work in the afternoons,
7:28
and then like a late night hangout spot.
7:31
In theory, this just felt a little bit like a corridor.
7:34
but there was a nice interlude off to the side, which was this mirrored room, which
7:38
I guess was kind of like an Instagram selfie spot that had these red roses.
7:42
That was fairly interesting and it did remind me of the
7:44
Mana Corridor on the ship.
7:46
if you've been on board Virgin Voyages, this is a very popular Instagram spot.
7:50
So that was definitely something that we noticed that was shared across the Virgin
7:54
Voyages and the Virgin Hotels experience.
7:56
Something that we noticed in general when we were going around these common areas
7:59
was, just about how well this suited the overall sort of Virgin look and feel.
8:04
So if you've been on the ship, you know this style of interior decorating,
8:08
the things like the indoor plants and the lighting and these sculptural
8:12
mirrored elements, these are the kind of things that we saw in the London
8:16
Virgin Hotel as well as some of the fixtures and fittings on the ship.
8:19
So there was definitely some interplay there.
8:21
Now when we were hunting around the common areas,
8:24
We noticed on the lifts there was a sign that said The Manor and we were like,
8:27
oh, well The Manor must be the nightclub because it's the nightclub on Virgin
8:31
Voyages, so it must be the nightclub here.
8:33
It turns out it was just a meeting room,
8:35
but when we asked about this to this spa receptionist,
8:38
she told us that actually The Manor is the name of Richard Branson's original
8:42
recording studio for Virgin Records.
8:45
I have to apologize 'cause I can't believe we got to this point in our
8:48
Virgin journey without knowing that.
8:50
But it seems a salient piece of information that a lot of people
8:53
behind the Virgin brand know.
8:55
If only somebody could have told us.
8:56
now I will say we visited the Virgin Hotel on a Sunday night,
9:00
which means that unfortunately the venues in the hotel weren't
9:03
hosting any nighttime entertainment.
9:05
but we were lucky enough to be given a little tour of those spaces that
9:08
would've been available if we arrived on maybe a Friday or a Saturday night.
9:12
And as you can see here, the design of these spaces for this nightclub
9:16
style area is absolutely incredible
9:18
with these really unique touches that really make it feel like
9:22
a proper Virgin experience.
9:24
And this even carried through to the gym as well, So the gym was actually
9:28
made out of the old hotel's library room, and you can see the features and
9:33
fixtures here were just reminiscent of this old fashioned library.
9:37
It was a really interesting concept for a gym.
9:39
and although I'm not a gym go-er myself, I'm sure there are worse places
9:43
to be working out than this really cool and funky interior design space.
9:47
So let's talk a little bit about the rooms, or should I say The
9:50
Chambers at the Virgin Hotel.
9:52
So we were lucky enough to get the keys to two different types of rooms.
9:56
And a few notes about all the rooms before we get into these
9:59
different types is that every single room comes with a steam shower.
10:04
So every single Chamber and every single suite has a shower,
10:08
which also acts as a steam room.
10:11
So there is no steam room in the gym, but you are very welcome to
10:14
use the one that comes in your room.
10:17
So the idea here is that you activate the steam function and after 90 seconds.
10:22
Steam will start to leave the outlets and you'll have this aromatherapy style
10:27
steam room available in your room 24/7.
10:30
This is definitely something that doesn't happen on board the ships.
10:34
This is very much a Virgin Hotels thing.
10:36
This might be something that is just hyperlocal to the London Shoreditch one,
10:41
but is a really nice feature of the rooms.
10:43
and if you are a fan of a steam room, having one available whenever you feel
10:47
like it when you're staying in the hotel is such an incredible thing.
10:50
It's also worth saying that in this Virgin Hotel in London, all
10:54
of the rooms are pet friendly.
10:56
And as much as we'd absolutely have loved to bring Cody along on this
10:59
journey, unfortunately, we were stepping on board the ship the next day, so
11:03
unfortunately had to stay at home.
11:04
This time,
11:05
All of the rooms as well have this iconic red SMEG mini bar fridge.
11:10
The mini bar itself is not normally complimentary unless you have a suite,
11:14
but the options available from the mini bar and the snacks available
11:17
as well, were a huge selection.
11:19
Every room comes with a Marshall Bluetooth speaker as well.
11:22
If you wanna put your own tunes on.
11:24
as well as a Lavazza pod coffee machine as well.
11:27
So you can make fresh coffee whenever you want.
11:30
There is, of course, all the features that you would normally expect.
11:32
So you get an iron and an ironing board,
11:34
you get an in-room safe, and the entertainment on the
11:37
TV is all included as well.
11:39
So the first room we were able to get a look at was called the Grand Chamber King.
11:44
So this was 275 square foot and had a king bed.
11:48
The bed itself is incredibly comfortable, from what I've read.
11:51
Virgin Hotels have put a huge amount of work into selecting the perfect beds for
11:56
their hotels, and it really pays off.
11:57
These are really, really comfortable beds.
11:59
There was also kind of an odd feature, but it came in pretty handy, at the
12:02
edge of the bed in one of the corners.
12:04
There's this almost seat style area.
12:07
I think they call it the playpen, but actually it was really useful
12:10
when we were just trying to sit with friends and enjoy a bit of a catch up.
12:13
It was actually a nice place to just sit and have a nice conversation.
12:17
So what looks like a really quirky bed design is actually quite practical.
12:20
especially when that Chamber itself didn't have a huge amount of space to
12:24
just sit and kick back with friends.
12:26
So actually using the bed is just easy enough.
12:28
So that is the standard room experience at the Virgin Hotel London Shoreditch.
12:32
But we were actually really fortunate enough to get our eyes on one of the
12:35
one bedroom suites also available.
12:38
and all I can really compare this to on the Virgin Spectrum is a
12:42
Mega Rockstar suite because this room was absolutely fantastic.
12:46
So this room on the website says it was 575 square feet.
12:50
I think the layout of our particular suite was even bigger than that.
12:53
and what you get at this level is an entire separate living area
12:58
with a sofa armchair space to work huge TV.
13:02
You've got a whole section with a mini bar and a kitchenette.
13:06
And then the bedroom itself is absolutely vast.
13:09
vast enough for a roll top bath, which is actually inside of the bedroom itself
13:14
With a whole host of luxury toiletries to use as well.
13:18
an absolutely huge amount of storage.
13:21
And then the bathroom was absolutely vast with two sinks.
13:25
Now we've been lucky enough to sail in Mega Rockstar once
13:29
before on Virgin Voyages.
13:30
Although our Gorgeous Suite was nowhere near as huge and as luxurious
13:34
as this suite at the London Hotel,
13:37
we had an absolutely lovely night in this suite with our friends,
13:40
and we were able to really enjoy all the space that it had to offer.
13:44
Is this something that we would normally book?
13:46
well, we're not quite in that tax bracket, but this was an incredible experience.
13:50
And if we had the money, we absolutely would.
13:52
Again, absolutely incredible place to stay in London.
13:55
Our only complaints really with this room are very, very minor, but it
13:59
always counts when you're traveling, and that's to do with the electric sockets.
14:03
There was absolutely no electric sockets to use by the bed whatsoever.
14:07
We had to charge all of our devices away from the bed, which if you are a traveler
14:12
and you need to get up in the morning and you're setting alarms, it's a real pain.
14:16
but other than that, it was an absolutely lovely stay, now, in terms of what
14:19
you can get up to in the evening in the Virgin Hotel in Shoreditch,
14:23
it's probably best for us to go down to the Hidden Grooves bar again.
14:27
And I think really this is what sets apart the Virgin Hotel from everything
14:31
else that you might see in Shoreditch.
14:33
And as I mentioned before, this opened in April, 2025,
14:36
and that was eight months after the hotel itself launched.
14:40
And that was because Richard Branson wanted it to be absolutely perfect.
14:44
And he said when he designed it, he actually decided exactly what records
14:48
were gonna be inside of the bar.
14:50
he wanted to design exactly how the listening stations were gonna work
14:54
and exactly how the vibe would play out.
14:57
The whole aesthetic is inspired by 1970s Hi-Fi
15:01
with wavy patterns and high gloss finishes
15:04
and vintage furniture.
15:06
It's designed to feel like a cool uncle's living room.
15:09
It's essentially nostalgia from Virgin Records Glory Days.
15:12
The vinyl collection spans from Virgin Records entire record collection
15:17
from the Sex Pistols, the Rolling Stones Culture Club,
15:21
Janet Jackson to Phil Collins.
15:23
and these aren't reproduction records.
15:25
These are the real deal.
15:27
So the idea is that you can take these records to listening stations
15:31
that has Project Audio Hi-Fi equipment.
15:34
You pick the records, you put your headphones on, and you experience
15:38
the music just as Branson intended.
15:41
with full fidelity, no compression, the full album experience.
15:45
And the cocktails in the bar are even inspired by Virgin Records itself.
15:50
So we saw on the menu one called "Never Mind", which was inspired
15:53
by the Sex Pistols album.
15:55
The idea is that the menu is dynamic,
15:58
So the actual recipe of the menus change depending on the mixologist.
16:02
We were told about their weekly events, that are hosted at Hidden Grooves,
16:06
Including a weekly listening event with guest DJs,
16:09
live music programming
16:11
and something called discovery hours where the staff recommend deep
16:15
cuts from the record collection.
16:17
Now in terms of dining, unfortunately our schedules didn't align with
16:21
the dining offered at the hotel,
16:23
but we did enjoy a really delicious rooftop breakfast before we headed down
16:28
to Portsmouth to join Brilliant Lady.
16:30
And the food and coffee were really delicious.
16:33
On the rooftop as well.
16:34
There is a rooftop pool.
16:36
The pool itself is very small, I will say.
16:38
But if you come from Virgin Voyages, We are quite used to a
16:41
small swimming pool, are we not?
16:43
but you do get those rooftop views of cross Shoreditch
16:46
and because this rooftop is operated by Blue Marlin Ibiza, In the evenings.
16:51
Expect to see some live DJ sets
16:53
where you can enjoy some cocktails under the stars.
16:56
so after over 20+ Virgin Voyages under our belt, what do we think of
17:00
the Virgin Hotels experience on land?
17:03
Well, there was definitely a few things that we noticed that you
17:06
can compare one for one with the Virgin Voyages experience, so
17:09
there is no nickel-and-dimeing.
17:11
So that's nice to see.
17:12
They're not asking for tips or gratuities on top of anything, but
17:16
that might be a London specific thing.
17:18
But we were never pressured to give a service charge or gratuities at any point.
17:23
We also noticed the tech forward design, so they want you to use the app
17:27
for you to book experiences or make changes to things.
17:30
so that's definitely some of that Virgin DNA being shared there.
17:33
There's definitely that upscale, casual vibe.
17:36
although we were suite guests, we never felt the need to dress up in
17:39
shirt and trousers at any point.
17:41
It was just cool-y and casually luxurious, just like we notice when
17:45
we step on board the ship as well.
17:47
Now, of course it's worth saying this is not Virgin Voyages on land.
17:51
So it's not an all inclusive experience where you're getting food included.
17:55
There isn't a number of restaurants that you can visit every single night.
17:59
There is unfortunately no Happenings Cast, so there's not a huge number of
18:02
events that you can go to all the time.
18:04
But one thing that really does shine through in the Virgin Hotels
18:07
experience is just that real Virgin ethos that you know from the ships.
18:12
So if you love the design, if you love the vibes, And you simply want to take some
18:16
of that sparkle from the ship onto land.
18:19
I would really recommend trying Virgin Hotels out.
18:23
They're certainly not some of the cheapest hotels that you're gonna stay
18:25
in, so it has to be worth your while.
18:27
But if you're looking for something as a little bit of a
18:29
treat, I definitely recommend it.
18:31
The one thing I will say is that if you are trying to combine your
18:34
Virgin Voyages experience with your Virgin Hotels experience right now,
18:39
there is no real way to do that.
18:41
We kind of had some proximity between London and Portsmouth.
18:44
It's only an hour and a half on the train.
18:46
There's not that many sailings from Portsmouth.
18:48
Anyway, The one thing that we are looking out for is the launch of Virgin

Hotels Miami, which promises to just be about 10 minutes away from Terminal V.
18:57
So if we're lucky enough to be invited along to the Virgin Hotels
19:00
experience in Miami, we can certainly give you an idea of what to expect
19:05
when you combine your Virgin Voyages experience with the Virgin Hotel.
19:09
experience I think that's where we're gonna really see
19:11
that brand synergy come in.
19:12
And when it comes to pricing, hotels are very different from cruise ships.
19:16
We all know this.
19:17
You are having to pay that London premium.
19:20
it's around about Β£300
19:21
a night.
19:22
For that original room that I showed you, the King Chamber.
19:25
And for this suite that we were able to stay in, normally that runs
19:28
at around about Β£800-900 a night.
19:31
So that's over $1000 US.
19:33
But if you think even about the king Chamber room, what you are
19:36
paying per night for the hotel is actually probably more than what
19:40
you would pay for a Virgin Voyage.
19:42
And let's not forget, on a Virgin Voyage, you get your food and
19:45
entertainment all included as well.
19:47
So in terms of value for money, I think Virgin Voyages is
19:50
always gonna win in that regard.
19:52
But hotels are always gonna be a very different proposition to cruise ships.
19:56
The one thing I will mention as well about Virgin Voyages and why we would
19:59
always choose a Virgin Voyages 7-night stay over a Virgin Hotel 7-night stay, is
20:05
that you do have that Sailor community.
20:07
Everyone is going through the same experience when you step
20:10
on board the cruise ship.
20:11
So from sailaway to PJ Party, to Scarlet Night, and even the
20:16
final night and disembarkation,
20:17
all of the sailors are going through all of that together, and that's where
20:21
you can really meet some lifelong friends and you're really never
20:24
gonna get that experience in a hotel.
20:26
so maybe if you've watched this video from the hotel perspective, maybe I can win
20:30
you over on the Virgin Voyage experience.
20:33

20:37
more about the Virgin Voyages experience.
