Virgin Voyages has started beta testing a brand-new version of its onboard app, aiming to fix long-standing frustrations with the current version. While the full rollout was originally expected by the end of 2024, the updated app is now being tested on select sailings before its wider release.

Limited Beta Testing for iOS Users

One sailor booked on Scarlet Lady’s Eastern Caribbean Antilles sailing on February 22 has been invited to participate in the test. At this stage, the beta version is only available to iOS users and is accessible through TestFlight, Apple’s platform for testing pre-release apps.

TestFlight allows users to install and test apps before they are officially released. Those invited will receive an email with instructions to download TestFlight from the App Store, then install the beta version of the Virgin Voyages app. Participants can use the app as they normally would but are encouraged to report any issues, such as freezing, slow loading, or errors, directly through TestFlight.

What’s Changing in the New App?

Virgin Voyages has stated that while the new app will look “similar” to the current version, it is built on newer, more stable technology. This approach ensures an easier transition for users while delivering a smoother experience. The existing app has already seen improvements in recent months, including spa trial add-ons, updates to priority boarding times, and an improved dining reservation system.

However, this new version aims to address the app’s biggest complaints, particularly performance and reliability.

We greatly appreciate your help in ensuring our new app is ready to launch soon and provides the best possible experience for our Sailors.” – Virgin Voyages Email

With this testing phase underway, Virgin Voyages is working to ensure the new app is ready for a full launch, offering a faster and more seamless experience for sailors in the future.

The app is expected to debut in the first half of 2025!

It’s in the email it’s coming but presumably a they are using more native technologies it’s harder for them to deploy now

LONG overdue, and it is a crime that they have taken so long to realize what an awful app they have. On our last cruise, before and after it, the app would “forget” my login credentials, and it was impossible to conduct any business that way. The online connections seemed just as bad. I’m genuinely hoping the forthcoming cruises I’ve signed up for will be MUCH LESS problematic. Otherwise, I’ll look elsewhere.

Testing now and not expected to launch for a whole year? Wow… good job the ships mostly run on them even if the app doesn’t!

Should be June was due last year!

Interesting they are asking us to beta their product. Shouldn’t they have their own QA department for this? In any case it’s progress!

This is normal in app development tbh and better for us in the end
