Virgin Voyages has released a new short film titled The Mermaids: A Virgin Voyages Tale, which introduces the animated personas behind the brand’s well-known ship mermaids. The video marks the start of a broader creative campaign that will continue throughout the year, ahead of the debut of Brilliant Lady this fall.

Developed in collaboration with creative agency Native Foreign, the film uses artificial intelligence to bring the mermaids to life in a style inspired by classic Hollywood cinema. Each mermaid represents a core brand theme — passion, courage, resilience and wisdom and is linked to one of the line’s four ships: Scarlet, Valiant, Resilient and Brilliant.

Bailey Edwards, Editorial Director at Virgin Voyages, said:

“Our mermaids have always represented the soul of the sea and the emotional essence of who we are as a brand. Bringing them to life through this cinematic series allowed us to give depth and voice to that mythos – not just as a visual motif, but as characters who reflect the spirit and individuality of our Sailors.”

Virgin Voyages says this is just the beginning, with more chapters planned to be released in the run-up to Brilliant Lady’s first sailing.

Virgin Voyages Using More AI Tools

While the film is intended to add dimension to Virgin Voyages’ branding, it also reflects the company’s growing focus on AI-powered tools across creative production. From marketing materials to internal workflows, the brand has begun to lean more heavily on platforms like OpenAI, Jasper and Canva.

AI-generated visuals and narratives are central to the film, a choice that offers creative flexibility but also carries the potential for mixed reactions, especially within artistic and creator communities where the use of AI remains a sensitive topic.
