Viral TikTok Brings Renewed Attention to Itinerary Change

A TikTok covering the itinerary change we covered in-depth last week has now surpassed 3 million views, bringing wider attention to the late switch from Bermuda to Canada.

The video highlights the contrast between the original tropical plans and the updated route to Saint John, prompting strong reactions across social media.

What Changed and When

Virgin Voyages made the change just days before departure, with Bermuda replaced by Saint John, New Brunswick on the April 6, 2026 sailing from New York.

  • Original plan: Bermuda itinerary
  • Updated plan: Saint John, New Brunswick
  • Arrival: April 8 at 6:30 a.m.
  • Departure: April 9 at 4:00 a.m.

The decision followed forecasts of strong winds between 20 and 35 knots, gusts up to 50 knots, and seas of 10 to 16 feet around Bermuda, which would have made docking difficult.

Sailors were offered $100 in onboard credit, with Shore Things in Bermuda automatically refunded.

Original Letter Sent to Sailors

Following the itinerary change, Virgin Voyages contacted sailors directly to explain the decision and outline next steps.

The message focused on safety as the primary reason for the change, highlighting deteriorating weather conditions and the need to avoid unsafe routing. It also introduced Saint John as the only viable alternative port and confirmed onboard adjustments, including additional programming and $100 in Sailor Loot.

In a separate video the TikTok account themccues read the letter to their viewers.

Virgin Voyages Acknowledges Messaging Missed the Mark

In response, Virgin Voyages has shared a series of social media posts addressing the situation directly. In one statement, the brand said the original email “wasn’t it” and acknowledged that it should have better reflected the reality of the change.

The message also noted that while itinerary changes can happen for safety reasons, clearer communication should have been provided at the time.

Memes, Replies and Ongoing Reaction

Alongside the statement, Virgin Voyages also took a lighter approach, sharing meme-style posts including asking NASA for help, referencing the situation. The original TikTok creators have continued to engage in the comments on Virgin Voyages’ posts, with the discussion still active.

Reactions remain mixed, with some understanding the safety reasoning, while others continue to question how the change was communicated and whether the compensation matched the impact of the itinerary switch.

The situation highlights how quickly larger itinerary changes (which are normal in the cruise world) can gain wider attention, especially when shared across social platforms.
