Resilient Lady’s Historic Arrival in Australia

Virgin Voyages’ Resilient Lady has made a significant debut in Australia, docking in Darwin to kick off its Summer season. This event is not just a milestone for Virgin Voyages but also a moment of cultural exchange and recognition.

A Warm Welcome by the Larrakia Nation

The ship’s arrival was celebrated with traditional ceremonies conducted by the Larrakia Nation. The Larrakia people, indigenous to the Darwin region, play a vital role in preserving and sharing their culture.

The Larrakia have a long history that predates European settlement. They are recognized for their strong sense of community, cultural practices, and the preservation of their traditions through art, language, and ceremonies. The Larrakia play a pivotal role in promoting awareness and understanding of indigenous cultures in Australia.

Saltwater Welcome to Country

This ceremony is an important practice among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Sailors were offered the chance to wade into shallow water in the Darwin Waterfront area. The Larrakia people’s Saltwater Cleanse ritual is a deeply symbolic practice rooted in their connection to the sea and the land. In this ritual, saltwater, regarded as sacred and purifying, is used to cleanse and rejuvenate the spirit. The ritual helped acknowledge and show respect for the traditional owners of the land. For Resilient Lady, this ceremony was a significant gesture of cultural respect.

Smoking Ceremony

Following the welcome, a Smoking Ceremony was conducted. This Aboriginal tradition, involving the burning of native plants, is believed to cleanse the area and ensure the well-being and safety of visitors. Participation by the ship’s sailors and crew, under the ‘Impact Squad’ banner, highlighted Virgin Voyages’ commitment to cultural understanding.
