Today marks a major moment for Virgin Voyages as Brilliant Lady begins her first Panama Canal crossing. The transit is expected to take around 8 hours as the ship makes her way through the canal on her journey to Los Angeles for her upcoming Mermaiden season, followed by Alaska.

This is a first for Virgin Voyages because Brilliant Lady is the only ship in the fleet able to fit through the canal locks. That makes today’s crossing an important milestone for the brand and a notable moment for those following along.

Track the Ship

Estimated Timings (Panama Time):

  • Agua Clara Locks: 7:30 am
  • Outside Agua Clara: 10:00 am
  • Gamboa: 1:00 pm
  • Cocoli Locks: 3:00 pm
  • Canal complete: 6:00 pm

Watch the Official Virgin Voyages Live Stream

Virgin Voyages is live streaming the full crossing, giving viewers a real time look at one of the world’s most well known engineering achievements. Note this feed has encountered some technical issues. Additional Webcam views are available on the Panaman Canal’s website here.

Live Updates and Photos

Virgin Voyages is streaming the crossing live, and we will be adding updates here throughout the day as Brilliant Lady continues through the canal.

Live Blog Concluded, thanks for following along!

Claire Gilligan-Murrell, a friend of the website, is also documenting the experience for her upcoming book, Big Crossings: Through the Locks, following her earlier Summer Season Pass book. We will share more on that with readers once it is ready, along with more from her experience of the day. Thank you to Gary M, Rob M & others for sending in their photos as well.

Additional Talks & Programming

Talks are taking place throughout the day as Brilliant Lady passes through the locks, helping explain what is happening in real time.

Dr. John A. Nichols, Professor Emeritus of History, is leading a session titled Panama Canal: The French, exploring the early attempts to construct the canal and the challenges faced during those first efforts.

Additional commentary and talks continue throughout the transit, offering insight into the engineering, history, and scale of the canal as the ship moves through each stage.

Lifeboat Procedure

As Brilliant Lady prepares for her Panama Canal crossing, lifeboats have been placed into “Panama mode,” allowing them to be brought closer to the ship for safe transit through the locks.

As a result, some areas of Deck 7 are temporarily restricted, and sailors in Sea Terrace: (Slightly) Smaller Balcony cabins may experience more limited views during the crossing.

These adjustments are standard for canal transits and will return to normal once the ship has cleared the canal.

Terrific photos, thanks for sharing! Ships able to traverse what was once land, crossing above sea level, the engineering involved is a marvel!
