Embarkation Process

Check-In & Arrival Time

Before arriving at the port for embarkation, check your Terminal Arrival Time in the Virgin Voyages app. This helps stagger arrivals and ensures a smoother boarding process for all guests. Boarding typically starts at 2:15 PM, but exact times may vary by port. It’s important to note that this your app time is an arrival time not boarding time.

Note: Arriving before your designated app time won’t allow you to board earlier, and you may end up waiting outside in the heat.

Luggage Drop-Off & Carry-On Bags

  • Luggage Drop-Off: Most ports (Portsmouth, Miami, Athens, Barcelona & San Juan) allow checked luggage drop-off from around 9 AM onwards. By doing this you can then go enjoy the city. Port staff will tag and deliver your bags to your cabin. Delivery times vary, but most luggage arrives within a few hours after boarding.
  • Store with Bounce: If you’re exploring the city before embarking we typically recommend using Bounce, a third-party luggage storage service that will retain your luggage before you head to the port! VV Insider will receive a commission when booking via this link.

Getting to the Terminal

For smooth and stress-free transfers to and from the port, we have partnered with Welcome Pickups, available at all ports currently served by Virgin Voyages. Their team of trained, hand-picked private drivers will meet you at a designated time and ensure you’re dropped off at the right place. Offering affordable rates similar to regular taxi fares, Welcome Pickups provides reliable service with punctual drivers who monitor arrival times to guarantee they’re always on time. Arriving at the Terminal & Check-In Process

Follow the signs for your embarkation category:

In some terminals a lounge will be available once you’re checked in.

Guide: Boarding The Ship Early

At check-in, you’ll receive a wristband, which serves as your room key and onboard payment method. Wristbands are color-coded:

  • Red – Standard guests.
  • Black – RockStars & VIPs.

Embarkation Security

Before boarding, your bags will go through a security scan, similar to the procedures at airports. All carry-on bags should be small enough to fit through a standard X-ray machine. While the security process is still in place, it’s less strict than what you’d experience at an airport. For example, you won’t need to follow the usual 100ml liquid limit, so you can bring standard-sized bottles without having to worry about restrictions. Just ensure your carry-on bags are appropriately sized for the X-ray machine.

Boarding the Ship

You will typically board around half an hour after your arrival time. Once your wristband is scanned at the gangway, you’re officially onboard! Crew members will greet you, and The Happenings Cast will be available to answer any questions.

Your Cabin & The Safety Video

Cabins are ready immediately upon boarding, so you can drop off your carry-on bag. Before exploring, watch the mandatory safety video via the in-room TV or Virgin Voyages app. This replaces the traditional muster drill instructions but you still must visit your muster later in the day.

Your First Day Onboard

I’ve heard that when you do an early luggage drop off at Miami before 11am that you can also get checked-in with wristband etc.. and then come back at your scheduled time for boarding later.
Is this correct, and am I right in assuming this will speed things up when you board at the scheduled later time?
    Thanks

Heard the same but not been able to confirm so assume it as a bonus if you can 🙂
