Historical Backdrop
The concept of ‘Razzle Dazzle’ finds its origins in an intriguing piece of naval history. Amidst the First World War, the Allied Powers encountered a problem with their naval supply ships being relentlessly targeted by German U-Boats. Traditional camouflage was ineffective due to changing environmental conditions at sea. The solution, inspired by the patterns found on zebras, came in the form of dazzle camouflage – a disruptive strategy of bold, geometric patterns and contrasting colors intended to confuse rather than conceal.
This striking design was implemented on over 4000 British merchant ships and 400 Naval vessels from 1917, a strategy so innovative that even Pablo Picasso sought to claim it as a Cubist technique.
