Historical Backdrop
The ‘Razzle Dazzle’ concept emerged from the First World War. German U-Boats relentlessly targeted Allied naval supply ships, making traditional camouflage ineffective due to changing sea conditions. Inspired by zebra patterns, dazzle camouflage introduced bold, geometric patterns and contrasting colors to confuse rather than conceal.
Over 4000 British merchant ships and 400 Naval vessels adopted this innovative strategy from 1917. Even Pablo Picasso claimed it as a Cubist technique.
