The Wake: Sophisticated Steakhouse at Sea

The Wake is Virgin Voyages’ modern take on a classic steakhouse. It focuses on steak and seafood, with a polished but relaxed atmosphere. It is popular for date nights, celebrations, and also for its well-known bottomless brunch.

An Elegant Atmosphere

Located at the stern of the ship, The Wake offers wide ocean views, with some tables looking directly out over the ship’s wake. Not every seat has the same view, but the overall setting feels open and stylish throughout. The space leans upscale, but the atmosphere stays comfortable and welcoming rather than overly formal.

The menu mixes steak and seafood with items like hanger steak, filet, New York strip, and New Zealand lamb chops. Appetizers such as clam chowder and roasted bone marrow are popular, and sides like creamed spinach, brown butter mushrooms, and twice-baked potato add extra variety. As of August 2026 the menus will slightly vary per ship.

Desserts are a highlight here, with the lemon cheesecake often getting strong reviews from sailors. The Baked Alaska is another popular choice and a good alternative if you prefer something lighter.

Optional Upcharges

Premium items are available for an extra charge, including raw bar selections and the aged tomahawk steak. The Grand Plateau features lobster tail, oysters, clams, shrimp, mussels, and snow crab claws, making it a popular option for seafood lovers. The tomahawk steak is also available as an additional upcharge.

Brunch/Lunch

Brunch starts at 8am with an extended lunch service starting at 12pm, which is when additional menu options become available alongside the brunch selection.

Bottomless Brunch

The Wake hosts one of two bottomless brunch options onboard, alongside Razzle Dazzle. The brunch includes unlimited drinks such as mimosas and Bloody Marys, and many sailors choose to use their Bar Tab here.

Overview

The Wake is a strong choice if you are looking for a steakhouse-style meal with a more elevated setting. Between the ocean views, classic menu options, and popular brunch, it remains one of the most booked restaurants onboard, so reservations are worth making early.

Really disappointed in the changes – there are minimal gluten-free options, especially if a diner doesn’t eat seafood, and several of the options are also vegan, meaning the GF diners don’t get a good protein option. GF eaters deserve more, and better options.

Just saw the updated Menu for Valiant Lady, and I’m sad that they removed the hanger steak for brunch 🙁 . Good to have a fish option, but the Hanger Steak is really good, better that the Filet Mignon in my opinion. But maybe it was just me…

    The Reuben Benedict sounds good!!

  3. Krista says:

Is there a separate dessert menu for The Wake? I’m not seeing the desserts in the dinner menu. Thank you!

  5. Kathy H says:

I just want to thank you, Rob, for your helpful suggestions and answers on every question we all ask.
I feel so much more prepared to go on our cruise in May!

  6. Jess says:

“ The Wake is the only restaurant on board that charges extra for certain dishes.” Is this still true? I thought Extra Virgin has an upcharge steak as well.

    1. Rob Sammons says:

Pink Agave and Gunbae too, have updated thankyou!

  7. Frank says:

With the bottomless brunch, can you take your last drink with you if you haven’t finished it?

  8. Rachelle says:

Did the wake really change the panna cotta to have almond in it? We went last year and I had this and was my fav dessert. I’m allergic to almonds so now I’m questioning is this new or is it the same but clarified? I’ll be on Resilient in 20 days but last year was Scarlet.

    1. Rob Sammons says:

The menus are up to date from May 2024

    Mr. Todd,
Thank you for this website, one question, do you need to make reservations for breakfast at the wake or first come first go.

    1. Rob Sammons says:

It’s best to make reservations for brunch yes 🙂 we have some more info on booking here: https://vvinsider.com/guides-and-faqs/guide/booking-restaurants/

  12. Liam Mills says:

I’ve noticed that The Wake has a hugely comprehensive wine list, whereas most other restaurants have a much more limited selection. Can I order a glass or bottle from The Wake menu in one of the other restaurants or bars on board? If not, could I walk up to The Wake, get a bottle to take away, and take this into one of the other restaurants?

    1. Rob Sammons says:

If you ask specifically they’ll try and source wine from around the ship for you 🙂

  13. Nicholas Hackett-Peacock says:

Have VV stopped reservations for breakfast at The Wake on disembarkation as no longer bookable on the app?

  14. Ruth says:

How early is the wake open for breakfast

    1. VV Insider says:

Should be 8am all the way till 1pm, but can vary depending on voyage
