Major Changes Made to “My Next Virgin Voyage” (MNVV) Placeholder Program
Virgin Voyages is updating its MNVV program, including new transfer restrictions and more flexible sailing dates. The changes are explained in full.
Virgin Voyages has announced two significant changes to its My Next Virgin Voyage program. The first takes effect on August 6, 2026, and restricts name changes on newly purchased MNVV placeholders. A second change coming in fall 2026 will remove the requirement to sail within two years.

What’s Changing Today?
Starting August 6, 2026, name changes will no longer be permitted on newly purchased MNVV placeholders. The person who purchases the placeholder must remain the original Sailor attached to it.
Virgin Voyages says MNVV was designed to help Sailors secure an offer for their own next voyage. Reselling your MNVV to another Sailor has always fallen outside the program’s terms, and the new restriction is intended to close the name-change activity that blurred that line.
The change applies only to new MNVV purchases made from August 6. Placeholders purchased before that date should continue to follow the terms that applied when they were purchased.
What’s Changing in Fall 2026?
Virgin Voyages will also remove the current two-year sailing window for new MNVV purchases starting in fall 2026.
Under the new system, Sailors will instead have one year to convert their placeholder into a confirmed booking, but the voyage itself can take place beyond the existing two-year limit.
In practical terms, a Sailor could purchase an MNVV and use it within the following year to book any eligible voyage then available for sale, even if that voyage departs several years later.
Virgin Voyages has not yet provided an exact launch date for this part of the update. It will apply to new MNVVs purchased after the fall rollout, rather than automatically changing the terms of existing placeholders.
What Is Staying the Same?
Virgin Voyages has confirmed several parts of the program that will continue:
- Sailors can purchase up to four MNVV offers for themselves during a voyage.
- The First Mate attached to the MNVV will remain linked when the placeholder is converted into a booking.
- Once an MNVV is converted, changes will follow the standard rules of the selected fare.
- Canceling an MNVV booking will still result in the loss of the MNVV promotional benefits.
The announcement does not introduce any changes to the value of the current MNVV discount or Sailor Loot benefits.
How This Affects Sailors
The upcoming fall update gives considerably more freedom to Sailors planning far in advance. Removing the two-year sailing deadline should be particularly useful for guests waiting for new seasons, ships or itineraries to become available.
However, the new name restriction means Sailors should only purchase an MNVV if they genuinely expect to travel themselves. Buying additional placeholders speculatively for friends, relatives or other travelers will no longer offer the same flexibility.
While the MNVV itself cannot be transferred if purchased from August 6, but standard booking rules take over after it has been applied to a sailing.
Those rules depend on the chosen VoyageFair Choice:
- Base: Names cannot be changed.
- Essential: The lead Sailor cannot be replaced, although another Sailor on the booking can currently be changed up to 48 hours before departure.
- Premium: All Sailors, including the lead Sailor, can currently be changed up to 48 hours before departure. Our Premium fare guide explains the additional flexibility.

How This Affects First Mates
Some First Mates have reacted strongly on social media. Travel advisors have previously purchased MNVVs themselves and offered them to clients as a booking incentive.
The August 6 change effectively ends this practice for new Base and Essential bookings. Premium and RockStar fares retain broader name-change rights after conversion, but Virgin Voyages says MNVV resale was never an authorized part of the program.
The change should clarify ownership and reduce payment or refund issues involving the original purchaser. First Mates will also remain linked to MNVVs purchased by their clients when they are converted.
What Should MNVV Holders Do Now?
MNVVs purchased before August 6 may still have the previous one-time transfer option, while purchases from August 6 onward must remain with the original Sailor.
For new purchases made after the fall rollout, remember that “sail anytime” does not mean the placeholder can remain unused indefinitely. Sailors will have one year to select and book an eligible voyage, after which the rules of the chosen fare will apply.
