Virgin Voyages is introducing significant changes to its onboard Wi-Fi system starting in January 2025, last year they updated their systems to provide even more reliable internet. While these updates bring more tailored options for connectivity, they also come with limitations that may impact sailors already booked on future sailings or those accustomed to the previous system. Here’s what you need to know.

New Wi-Fi Plan: Work from Sea

The new Work from Sea plan is designed for remote workers and sailors requiring enhanced connectivity. It includes features like audio and video calls, streaming, VPN access, virtual meetings, and gaming. However, this premium option comes at a steep cost of $50 per day for a Voyage Pass for 2 devices. Unlike the other plans, there is no 24-hour pass available.

While this plan caters to those needing reliable internet for work, its high price point and lack of flexibility may disappoint sailors who relied on the previously included VPN access in Premium Wi-Fi.

Updates to Existing Plans

Classic Wi-Fi (Previously Basic Wi-Fi)

Classic Wi-Fi remains free for all Sailors, supporting one device per person. It is suitable for basic browsing, social media (TikTok, Facebook, X etc), and email. However, it excludes essential features such as video or music streaming, video calls, virtual meetings, and work-related tools like Zoom, Dropbox, or VPNs. It is not suitable for remote work.

Premium Wi-Fi

Premium Wi-Fi has seen an adjustment, at a cost of $40 per day for a 24-hour pass or $30 per day for a Voyage Pass for one device, with additional devices priced at $15 each. The Voyage Pass covers the remaining duration of the cruise from the time of purchase. Premium Wi-Fi supports messaging, video and audio calls, social media, streaming, and general browsing. However, it no longer includes VPN access, which may frustrate remote workers or those needing secure connections.

Premium Wi-Fi is still complimentary for Mega RockStars, Deep Blue Extras, 485c, and other select groups. Eligible Sailors in these categories can connect up to two devices. However, those who relied on VPN access as part of Premium Wi-Fi may feel let down by this change.

Key Considerations for Sailors

These changes could pose challenges for sailors who booked their voyages expecting features like VPN access to be included in Premium Wi-Fi. Virgin Voyages heavily promoted the “working from helm” concept last year. The introduction of the costly Work from Sea plan will require some sailors to upgrade to maintain the functionality they previously had.

Additional device charges apply across all paid plans, though watches do not count toward device limits as they connect through phones.

Summary of Launch Dates

The updated Wi-Fi system and new Work from Sea tier will roll out as follows:

  • Scarlet Lady & Valiant Lady: Now
  • Resilient Lady: January 21, 2025

While these updates offer more options for sailors with specific needs, the removal of previously included features and increased costs at such short notice has left some sailors unhappy.

I have an upcoming sailing on Resiliant Lady and have DBE. I see in some of the comments apps are being blocked. Do you know if I can still use WhatsApp to be able to text and or call my family like I did on previous voyages?

    1. Rob Sammons says:

Yes it’s more specialized things being blocked like gaming and some work apps. WhatsApp is fine on the Premium plan: https://vvinsider.com/guides-and-faqs/guide/wi-fi-internet-access-remote-working/

    Also on resilient lady
Doing B2B and last week with my DBE I had to log out of my phone to connect my switch, not a big issue. Only to save game to cloud every few days . This sailing it shows I can connect 2 devices but I cannot connect my switch. And sailor services have been pretty stumped. They suggested all the things I already knew to do over chat , then at the desk they tried and even called IT and he had no idea . I’ve given up trying now , as last week I could log out of my phone to connect but that doesn’t work now.
I have also noticed that a lot of sites that I used last sailing are now blocked. So for me it’s not better .

    1. Rob Sammons says:

Work from Sea is the only one to support Gaming now, so premium they have blocked a bunch of gaming services likely including Nintendo

  3. Sammy says:

VV taking away extra perks makes them like any other cruise line who charges for everything value is going down for the higher price point! Question becomes how many sailors will start shopping around😥

  4. Billy Cunningham, II says:

I am on resilient lady now and the new Wi-Fi is blocking several sites that have nothing to do with VPNs or work. I contacted sailor services who called the tech on board and they said there’s nothing they can do about it. The sites are even blocked for people with the highest tier.
For example, I wanted to make a reservation at Bonefish Grill when I return home however that site is blocked.

    1. Rob Sammons says:

That’s so odd, does it show a screen that says it’s blocked?

      1. Jason Steel says:

Might not be VV blocking it. We switched to Columbia internet access point. Using my own VPN fixed the issues I was having. I on board RL as well. Not happy about bait and switch on internet. But would add on this cruise the work at sea option is going down per day after the second day so one way to minimize the impact is IFFF you can move the need for it to back half of your cruise the financial impact is less.

  5. Felix says:

This change is massive! Was about to book a 11-day trip and work for couple days – no longer feasible with new internet charges… Sadly, not the first VV move to monetize its sailors love and loyalty

    1. Rob Sammons says:

I would reach out to sailor services

  6. Andy M says:

I’m on RL at the moment.
Premium WiFi speed is good, it should be at that price, but the 1 device (I’m not Deep Blue Extras) thing is a pain. Constantly having to re-log in on the other device (it then disconnects the previous one) is very annoying.
It also makes it impossible to use any log-ins that require 2FA or similar app based authenticators.

    1. Rob Sammons says:

Good to know Andy. Going forward they’ve made a package add on in the app that gives you two devices for price of one if you buy pre sail good to know for the next cruise https://vvinsider.com/guides-and-faqs/guide/packages/

      1. Andy M says:

        Thanks Rob.
That’s good to know. Will see what Sailor Services say!

  7. Elliot Hague says:

    So update!
Premium works fine on resilient lady for teams and zoom used all morning!
Doesn’t work for IPSEC and L2TP VPN’s anymore.

    21st January 2024 Resillient Lady

    1. Rob Sammons says:

Sounds like the VPN rules are in full effect 🙁 thanks for the update Elliot! How are you finding the speeds?

      1. Elliot says:

Worked well for Teams with video and screen sharing! OneDrive uploads worked great too.

Luckily the company I work for allows alternative access to the VPN sign on.

Do feel they need to offer some alternative day passes of the WFS package or maybe 50 hours across the voyage upgraded!

  8. Kimmy says:

The fact that VV switched to Starlink is awesome but the high jump for premium with such little notice to their long time sailors feels a bit inexcusable. All things considered, the least VV should offer is two devices per cabin when booking upon boarding the first day for the entire cruise.

    1. Rob Sammons says:

Agreed the removal of devices was the first start of this all last year. Basic used to get two

  9. Researchmgr says:

Disallowing VPN combined with a price increase significantly raises the cost, especially for long sailings. Since I’m always online and frequently streaming, this will impact my future choice of vacations.

    1. Rob Sammons says:

Yup $700 for a Transatlantic cruise for example!

  10. Tracy Nicholson says:

This seems very similar to what the airlines did with WiFi. I’m hoping that at some point, all of this becomes free.

    1. Rob Sammons says:

Virgin Voyages seems to be working backwards though with this, taking away existing perks 🙁

  11. Joseph says:

I’m curious, does one device per sailor mean that if I connect my phone to WiFi, can I later disconnect it from WiFi then connect my tablet or laptop? I guess I’m asking, does one device mean one device at a time or one device for the duration of the trip?

    1. Rob Sammons says:

Correct one device at a time and can switch at any time it’ll just disconnect the other. We have some more info in our guide https://vvinsider.com/guides-and-faqs/guide/wi-fi-internet-access-remote-working/

    2. Lesley says:

On our last cruise we had our two iphones and a laptop for work, we had 2 devices with deep blue extras. When we connected the third device, one of the other two disconnected. It didn’t cause too much hassle. Assume the same will be happening from January.

      1. Rob Sammons says:

Yes Deep Blue Extras continues to get access to two devices on Premium https://vvinsider.com/guides-and-faqs/guide/wi-fi-internet-access-remote-working/

  12. Steve Kreinik says:

Will one have to pay the full $50 to get the Work from Sea package if you already have premium WIFI or just $20? And regardless of cost can you just upgrade for a day or two at any point and just pay for that day or would you have to upgrade for balance of cruise?

    1. Rob Sammons says:

Should be the full $50, don’t think it’s factored in if you already get a free benefit for Premium. You have to have the full voyage pass for Work from Sea. We’ve broken down the packages in more details here: https://vvinsider.com/guides-and-faqs/guide/wi-fi-internet-access-remote-working/

      1. Bill says:

That’s definitely wrong. They should offer a reduced price upgrade for folks who get Premium for free.

        1. Rob Sammons says:

Agreed you do at least keep your two devices
