Virgin Voyages has confirmed that its existing Sailing Club benefits will continue through the end of 2028. The announcement comes as the cruise line celebrates reaching two million sailors.

The extension provides certainty for eligible sailors booking future voyages, but leaves a familiar question unanswered: what comes next for those who have already sailed well beyond the programme’s fifth-voyage milestone?

Existing Benefits Continue Through 2028

The extension covers Blue Extras and Deep Blue Extras. Under the current qualifying structure, sailors receive Blue Extras on their third and fourth eligible voyages, with Deep Blue Extras available from their fifth eligible voyage onwards.

Another Extension to the Existing Programme

This is the third successive extension in the programme’s recent history, following the April 2024 announcement extending benefits through 2025 and the subsequent extension through 2026. The latest announcement takes benefits through the end of 2028.

The 2024 update introduced Blue Extras and opened Deep Blue Extras to sailors reaching their fifth eligible voyage. Those changes established a clearer route into the programme, but the standard published structure still offers no additional tier to work towards beyond that point.

Expectations of a fuller loyalty programme date back to August 2022. In its original announcement, Virgin Voyages described the initial perks as a precursor to a loyalty programme expected to make its formal debut in 2023.

During the May 2025 Celebration Voyage, the cruise line also discussed plans for a new level above the existing tiers. Extending current benefits through 2028 does not rule out further changes before then, but it does not provide a launch date or qualification details for that next level either.

Our View: Loyal Sailors Deserve More Than Another Extension

Continuing existing benefits is welcome, but another extension is disappointing when sailors have been hearing about the programme’s next chapter since 2022.

Many loyal sailors are already on ten or more voyages. Within the standard Sailing Club structure, they receive the same benefit package on their tenth, fifteenth or twentieth eligible voyage as someone reaching their fifth. The perks still have value, but there is no further published milestone to aim for.

These are sailors who have repeatedly chosen Virgin Voyages, often introducing friends and family to the brand along the way. A more developed loyalty program should recognize that continued commitment and give them a clear reason to keep building their status.

Another question is whether Virgin Voyages could expand its “secret” Club 485C to more sailors. To VV Insider’s knowledge, the private club has not welcomed new members in the past year. Its perks, including Treat Yourself items, welcome drinks and access to Richard’s Rooftop, offer a glimpse of what a higher loyalty tier could provide.

Growing Numbers Put Pressure on Existing Perks

There is also a practical knock-on effect. As more sailors qualify for Deep Blue Extras, some benefits become harder to deliver in a way that feels meaningful. Priority boarding is already an example.

On popular sailings, we are already seeing priority boarding become heavily oversubscribed. Depending on the voyage, Deep Blue Extras numbers can reach over 500 sailors, while Splash of Romance can bring up to 180 sailors with its own boarding benefit. These groups can overlap, but both contribute to the pressure on the early boarding process.

When hundreds of sailors qualify for an earlier boarding experience, the advantage becomes less noticeable. A benefit can remain on the list while becoming less valuable in practice.

The same applies for the Premium WiFi perk which is already seeing connectivity issues on board and has had to change when Work from Sea was introduced.

Extending the same structure through 2028 gives more sailors time to reach Deep Blue Extras. Without changes to how boarding is organized or benefits are delivered, we expect that pressure to grow, particularly on voyages popular with repeat sailors.

Sailors who earn these benefits should be able to enjoy them. Virgin Voyages needs a program and an operation that can accommodate its growing loyal audience without allowing the experience to become diluted.
