Virgin Voyages’ Smaller Wearable Bands Now Rolling Out

Virgin Voyages is now rolling out a smaller, simplified version of its wearable band, starting with Scarlet Lady sailings.

Virgin Voyages has started rolling out its redesigned wearable bands to guests on Scarlet Lady. The new version is noticeably smaller and no longer includes the playful phrases that previously appeared on the back of the band, something many guests had grown fond of.

Changes to the Wearable

The updated band is around 40% smaller and has dropped the unused long-range technology found in earlier versions. Virgin Voyages has confirmed that these components were never really activated onboard, with features like Shake for Champagne handled through the Virgin Voyages app instead.

What remains is a streamlined, more sustainable version that keeps all the core functions. The band still acts as your room key, onboard charge method, and check in system, including for areas like Richard’s Rooftop if you’re staying in a Rockstar suite.

Same Strap, Smaller Tech

While the tech module has changed in shape and size, the red rope strap made from BIONIC® yarn remains the same. This material is created using coastal and marine plastic waste, and each band still represents the equivalent of half a recycled plastic bottle.

Guests are encouraged to keep the strap as a memento and return the tech portion for recycling at the end of their voyage.

Rollout Progress

Scarlet Lady has now begun issuing the smaller version. Resilient Lady is still giving out the larger band, and it’s currently unknown if Valiant Lady has transitioned. On Scarlet Lady, Rockstar guests are still receiving the larger band for now.

This change is expected to become standard across the fleet later this year and will likely be the default by the time Brilliant Lady enters service in September.

Side-by-Side Comparison

As seen in the photos above, the new band:

  • Is smaller and more compact
  • No longer features printed phrases on the back
  • Retains the same strap and loop design

We’ll continue monitoring the rollout across ships and share any updates on when each ship fully switches over.

They’re probably removing the phrases because the white lettering would wear down and discolor over time. I was always off-put by this visible sign of being worn by some stranger, so I would opt for the newer looking pucks with fresh white lettering. Without the wording there is no visible proof of how old or work it might be.

  2. Sandra says:

Yeah keep the phrases! It gives it yet another element and stands out from all the other usual cruise lines.

  3. Leo I says:

I don’t think that will keep sailors from keeping the wearables. I always keep mines as a souvenir and I’ll keep taking them with me whether they come with a phrase or not. Funny phrases will be missed for sure.

  4. Glen Hendy says:

I prefer the smaller band as it’s not weighted. I have mine reprogrammed to unlock the terminals at work, not that I needed an excuse to keep it on!

  5. Terri Clarno says:

Going to print my own sayings on my Cricut if anyone wants one!!! Fun and personalized.

    1. Micor says:

Sign me up for a sheet!

    2. Cathy T says:

I’m on the Scarlet Lady right now in Iceland and I have the longer one, what’s up? I’m going to ask today.

      1. Rob Sammons says:

They may still be running through some old stock. It’s smaller puck not smaller band.

  6. Marcus Bailey says:

We had the smaller band on Scarlet in June. More comfortable, less cumbersome and doesn’t bounce around so much when you’re on the move.

    1. Wei says:

Maybe it’ll finally work on both sides with the weight inside gone.

  7. Grant Brown says:

I wonder if the attachment still works the same. I don’t understand how the person at check-in always seems to put the band on in a way that comes loose in a couple of hours, but the next staff member or my wife adjusts the band in a way that it lasts the rest of the cruise.

  8. Sharon Hite says:

The sayings were cute when you first get the band, then almost forgettable. I am glad that they are changing to a smaller design. While some aren’t happy, it’s still better than wearing a lanyard around your neck! Can’t wait to get my new band in November!!

  9. Stephanie Clarke says:

Will miss the message. It’s part of the fun seeing which one you’ve got!

  10. Aubrey says:

I think they are making a mistake getting rid of the fun phrase…makes it more special and adds to their branding…really costs them nothing to add the cute little message. I like that it is smaller though.

    1. Ashley Stevenson says:

I think it might be for the people keeping them because of the fun phrases and they are wanting to be able to reuse them more, that’s just the first thing that crossed my mind with it, people will be more apt to returning the device while still able to keep the band part

  11. Scott says:

Yay, smaller. Boo, I’ll miss the fun phrase

  12. Marylou Hansen says:

    seems almost pointless
