Tipping & Gratuities

How tips and gratuities work on Virgin Voyages, including fare differences and when you may need to pay extra.

Virgin Voyages has always aimed to make cruising simple by removing the pressure to tip. Until October 7, 2025, gratuities are bundled into the voyage fare. From that date forward, gratuities are shown separately for transparency. The total cost of your vacation does not change, but you will now see the gratuity line item in a clearer way.

Booked Before October 7, 2025 – Legacy Fare

If your voyage was booked under the Legacy Fare, gratuities are already included in your fare. This covers all standard onboard services:

  • Restaurant servers
  • Bar staff
  • Your cabin attendant

You will not see an extra service charge on your onboard account, and you never need to tip unless you wish to. Some people like to give a cash tip to Crew members who provided exceptional service, but this is optional and not expected.

Booked On or After October 7, 2025 – VoyageFair Choices

For new bookings made under VoyageFair Choices, gratuities will no longer be bundled into the fare. Instead, they must be added separately either before you sail or during your voyage. All cabin types and all VoyageFair Choices pay the same nightly amount:

  • Pre-Purchase: $20 per Sailor per night if prepaid before sailing
  • Onboard: $22 per Sailor per night if settled onboard

There is no opt-out of gratuities except in rare circumstances, the amount will be automatically added to your folio. If you want to remove these you will need to contact Sailor Services on board. This change does not impact Crew wages or onboard tipping policies, it is purely a matter of displaying charges more transparently.

Example: A 7-night voyage for two people priced at $3,500 before October 7th will instead show $3,220 plus $280 in gratuities ($20 × 2 × 7 nights).

Tipping Calculator

We are creating a simple gratuity calculator to help you estimate your costs based on voyage length and number of guests for both pre-purchase and onboard spend. This will be available on VV Insider soon.

Extra Tipping

The onboard policy remains unchanged. There is no expectation to tip at bars, restaurants, or in your cabin. If you choose to give more, here is how it works:

  • Cash only — tips cannot be charged to your account or wearable band
  • US dollars are best as it is in the on board currency.
    • Local currency may be appreciated but keep in mind future itineraries and some crew can not get off the ship.
  • Give tips directly to the Crew member, not to Sailor Services

Cash Tipping in this way is always optional and will not affect the level of service you receive.

The Best Way to Say Thanks

One of the most meaningful ways to show appreciation is by mentioning Crew members in your post-cruise survey. These comments are shared with Virgin Voyages leadership and can help Crew gain recognition and career opportunities.

What’s Not Included in Gratuities

While gratuities cover all standard onboard services, there are a few exceptions where cash tipping may still be expected:

  • Bag porters at the terminal (usually $1–$2 per bag in US ports)
  • External tour operators if you book excursions independently
  • Local customs in international ports may vary, so check before arrival

Bottom Line

If you booked under the Legacy Fare, gratuities are included in your voyage price. If you book under VoyageFair Choices after October 7, gratuities must be either prepaid or paid onboard, but the total cost of your vacation remains the same. There is no need to bring cash for tipping unless you plan to give something extra to an individual Crew member.

This will be my 5th cruise with VV and after now finding out about this cahnge, to say I’m now pissed off would be an understatement. The price you pay for the cruise should be the price, VV already rips off the drinks, this will defiantly be our last one with VV.

  2. Graham Barron says:

Tipping is out of hand now. Do you tip your postman? What about the postman that collects mail from post-boxes, who tips him?
Do you tip the waiter in a restaurant ? What about the person who washes the dishes, who tips them?
Do you tip the taxi driver? what about the person taking your call and sending the driver, who tips them?
If needed increase the cruise fare for wages and lets tip who we think deserves it for their service.

  3. Bill says:

Of course removing these so called “gratuities” will be discouraged… But they WILL remove them if you demand they do so…

Forced gratuities are not tips… Handing people that help you during the cruise cash is a tip!

  4. Sue says:

My husband and I are doing 2 consecutive cruises on the same boat. Can we opt out of paying gratuities twice?

    1. Rob Sammons says:

Two separate cruises = two gratuities paid per night.

  5. Brad says:

So I got a comped room.. and the gratuity add on is already there does that mean I’m paying the 20 per day at the end of the cruise or is it already paid ??

    1. Rob Sammons says:

      No you’re all paid 🙂

  6. Laura says:

I was given a free cruise from a casino December 2026 where the flyer specifically states gratuities are included. I just booked today to find out that now they will be charged to me. Am I able to get this resolved and removed prior to boarding? I can supply the flyer where it shows gratuities were included.

    1. Rob Sammons says:

You need to reach out to Sailor Services for this

  7. S. Reed says:

The addition of multiple fare options and separate gratuities is quite disheartening as a 3x VV sailor. These changes have increased the price of sailing and seem to be a crafty practice on VV’s part. The previous model was not broken. As a result of the recent changes, VV’s has closed the gap in operating like legacy cruise lines. Soon they’ll start charging for wifi, water, restaurants and all the other amenities that were initially included in the fare. Charging a per person, per day fee for gratuities is ridiculous considering it is only 1 room. Most Stewards are providing pleasant but basic service. Staff that are providing extraordinary service will be tipped out of pocket. It would be more palatable if the gratuities were $20/$22 per day for the cabin. The poor justification and lack of transparency, seems deceptive.

  8. Kenneth Bridgeman says:

I am a frequent cruiser and I have always opted out or removed automatic gratuities once on board. I Prefer to tip directly to the INDIVIDUALS who made my cruise great and I make sure to tip generously. When you say that cancelling the auto daily gratuities is heavily discouraged by the service desk, do you mean that they will refuse if I insist? Or do you mean that they will try to guilt me into relenting but ultimately do what I ask?

    1. Rob Sammons says:

Sailor Services will handle the situation on board but will want a valid reason to do so. Virgin Voyages doesn’t operate on a tip individuals system like other cruise lines.

    2. Elle says:

Same. Unless Cruise lines can provide a folio showing how the tipped the crew out specifically.

Also, if Virgin wants to know, most who were so gung ho with VV, was because it felt more professional to not ‘nickel & dime’ sailors with ‘waiting’ to charge the grats. Just like Virgin does at home in England. I, for one, thought this would change the tide for how most cruise lines do things.

It is really a huge buzzkill because the ‘tipping’ question in the US should stop by paying a worker their due, not what a customer is willing to pay. Imho

  9. Kimmy H. says:

I’m sailing for the 4th time on VV but first time in a Rockstar suite. On the previous 3 sails I tipped 2 of my cabin attendants for providing exceptional service. This is my first Rockstar level experience and I’m unsure what is appropriate for the cabin attendant and Rockstar agent. I would appreciate comments and guidance before we leave on November 9th.

  10. Steve says:

This honestly has been disappointing and deceptive. Just a cash grab as if this was a separation of itemizing gratuities from the cruise fair why then did the cruise fair not drop by $20 / $22 per day / per sailor? Price remained the same on all sailing the day after. They are assuming their customer base are not aware of such practices. Honestly though they were better than that. Hope this doesn’t mean the start of this company becoming like all the other cruise lines.

We have a price tracker on our booking portal, you can see where voyages didn’t remain the same price vvinsider.com/book

      1. Shamira says:

Well I am booking the same trip I booked last year. The booking price was still the same but when I went to check out now I am seeing $200 extra for gratuities. So it appears that there is now an increase…

        1. Rob Sammons says:

Pricing is dynamic so year to year is difficult to compare. You can use our price tracker to see price increases vvinsider.com/book

  11. jordan23 says:

has nothing to do with transparency. Had everything to do with the cruise costing more

  12. Tisha says:

I read the comment where it says it is discouraged to opt out on board, however VV did this to themselves, no one even thought about gratuities with the previous model. Now when they opt-in, it increases their deposit. Two questions:
    1) can they opt in anytime prior to embarkation?
    2) can they opt out on board if they don’t pre-pay?

    1. Rob Sammons says:

      Hi Tisha

      1) Up to 24 hours before it can be added to the sailing
      2) If gratuities haven’t been prepaid, Sailor Services will handle it onboard. In most cases they’ll discourage opting out and instead look to resolve any concerns, since gratuities are part of how Virgin operates.

      1. Elle says:

Why, just why create such confusion?! This is a miss by VV, unless this is a diversion from a latter more sinister plan 🤔☹️

No one really understands and VV is doing a poor job of both being more transparent and being clearly received/understood.

If it was already being charged, NOBODY WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE ‘HIDDEN’ Charge then why jack around with a part of your business model that is not broken.

  13. Terri Commonas says:

We feel, for us, that tipping our cabin attendants and our RS agent is a no brainer. There is no better way to show appreciation for personalized service, for us. We always tip on day one and usually tip again on our final day. These humans work very hard with no days off..we feel like this is much better than just a pat on their back…again, this is how we roll and it doesn’t matter to us how much their salary is as we want them to know that we care and are very great full for their attention.

  14. Brandon says:

If there is no opt out, and these don’t effect crew compensation, then at least in the US, these are not, legally speaking, gratuities. This is just them showing you what portion of your fare goes to crew wages.

To be gratuities (in the US) they have to be optional, and they have to directly effect the amount the employee receives in compensation. I was thinking maybe Virgin was making this change because in the US gratuities are about to become non-taxable; but reading this explanation I appear to be incorrect.

    1. Rob Sammons says:

Opting out won’t be available for pre-paid and heavily discouraged for on board, it’ll be added automatically to your folio.

      1. Jeffrey Dreiblatt says:

Is the advantage of paying onboard that you can pay using loot?

        1. Rob Sammons says:

Yeah in theory you should be able to use loot on board but you do pay $2 per person extra per night to do so so probably doesn’t weigh out well

      2. Elle says:

You’ve completely ignored his question and not addressed his key concerns 🤔 which is that these can not be called. ‘gratuity’ in the U.S. and also this answer does not reflect how VV is actually being transparent.

        1. jordan23 says:

          Not a US registered ship

      3. J Paterson says:

I don’t prepay and ask guest services to remove the daily added gratuity once onboard. We always reward our cabin steward and waiter for their excellent service and I think everyone should have the option on how they prefer to tipping.

        1. Rob Sammons says:

Tips go to all crew. Not just those visible to you. The tipping system is designed around this.
